Under general direction of the Power System Principal Engineer, to provide a wide variety of
moderate to complex engineering and other tasks in support of the Agency’s hydroelectric facility.
This position will work in the Engineering function of the Agency. This position will perform duties
including project management of non-routine and capital projects, engineering design,
maintenance and compliance support, special projects, and other related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Hydro Engineer-Electrical a journey level classification in the Hydro Engineer series directly
reporting to the Principal Hydro Engineer and ultimately, the Power Systems Manager, and is
distinguished from the Senior Hydro Engineer by the assignment of the full range of duties.
Employees at the journey level receive instruction or assistance as new, unusual or unique
situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.
This position needs to be able to work collaboratively with peers, maintenance and operating
personnel, administrative staff and upper management to achieve Agency objectives. The Hydro
Engineer-Electrical will also be assigned projects requiring application of basic mechanical and/or
civil engineering fundamentals. Work is performed with a broad framework of general policy, and
requires creativity and resourcefulness to accomplish goals and objectives. All work is expected
to be carried out in a professional, ethical, organized, accurate, secure, timely and confidential
manner.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Duties of the working Hydro Engineer (Civil, Mechanical or Electrical) may include, but are not limited to:
The working Hydro Engineer-Electrical may act in a lead capacity, or as part of a team, and will
be responsible for portions or complete projects. These projects would be both maintenance and
capital work to be taken through planning, justification, approval, supporting studies/testing,
design, construction oversight, and project close out processes. The Hydro Engineer will assist
the Agency’s Chief Dam Safety Engineer to support the Agency’s Dam Safety Program. The
ideal candidate would have knowledge of the principles and practices of Electrical engineering
related to hydrogenation and water collection projects and facilities. This position will conduct
studies, analysis, investigations, provide reports and make recommendation to management on a
correct plan of action going forward. This position will provide assistance and support to crews
performing maintenance, repairs, modification or installation work on hydroelectric facilities. This
position will interfaces with and manage outside consultants in support of engineering needs of
the Agency. This position will inspect and analyze project features such as dams, tunnels,
penstocks, spillways, intake structures, powerhouses and roads. This position will support the
preparation of Requests for Proposals (RFP’s), bid documents and specifications for related
services and equipment, contracts and agreements. This position will prepare reports, keep
records, revise drawings, draft practices and internal standards, assist other trades, organize
work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow up on assignments. The Hydro Engineer Electrical
will work with all personnel inside and outside the Agency including staff, managers,
contractors and the public. This position will support identifying hazards in the work place and
preparing Job Hazard Analyses.
CAPABILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS
The Hydro Engineer-Electrical must have the ability to see well enough to read fine print and
view a computer screen; speak and hear well enough to understand, respond and communicate
clearly, orally and in writing, have independent body mobility to stand, sit, walk, stoop, climb
stairs (640 feet of rise), have dexterity of climb in and out of close quarters and be able to walk
up to 3-5 miles in steep terrain in a day, the ability to bend to access the work environment and
a standard office environment; manual dexterity and sufficient use of hands, arms and shoulders
to repetitively operate a keyboard and to write, the ability to sit or walk for prolonged periods of
time, and use the required safety equipment including safety hard hats, belts, harnesses, face
guards, safety glasses and goggles, safety shoes, protective clothing, ear protection and other
safety equipment where necessary. Must be able to lift and carry 35 lbs., in accordance with
safe working practices and to comply with all Agency equipment and safety policies and
procedures, and California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (CALOSHA) rules and
regulations. Must be able to respond to after-hour calls, reside close enough to respond within
one hour, and work overtime as needed.
DESIRABLE TRAINING, EXPERIENCE & LICENSES:
QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
MINIMUM:
A Bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited college or university in Electrical
Engineering.
2-5 years of increasingly responsible engineering experience.
PREFERRED:
5-10 years of increasingly responsible engineering experience.
Two or more years of experience in hydroelectric generation and/or water collection
facility and/or a closely related field.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
Engineer in Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate.
Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license and maintenance of an
acceptable driving record.
PREFERRED:
Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification is highly desired.
Electrical Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly desired or the ability to obtain.
POST OFFER/PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL:
Employment is subject to passing a physical examination, including a drug test and preemployment
background check.

Insurance (medical, dental, vision): Agency will pay full cost of Health Insurance for employee
and dependents equivalent to the least expensive plan available to any qualified employee.
Retirement: CalPERS: Classic Members- 2%@55 plan final 12 months, (Agency pays 5% of
the employee contribution for classic members only); New Members – 2%@62 final 36 months.
Employee contributions are fully refundable with interest upon termination; vested after 5 years.
The Agency does not participate in Social Security, but contributes to a deferred income plan in
lieu of Social Security. Life Insurance: Agency pays for a $50,000 life insurance policy.
