Research Archaeologist
Reporting to the OSA Research Director and exercises functional supervision of field and lab technicians as assigned to specific project teams. Perform field investigations, laboratory analyses, and prepare reports in accordance with project needs, established guidelines, and in coordination with the Research Director and project staff. Frequent in-state travel is required.
About the Office of the State Archaeologist
The OSA is an organized research unit of the University of Iowa established in 1959. The mission of the Office of the State Archaeologist is to develop, disseminate, and preserve knowledge of Iowa’s human past through Midwestern and Plains archaeological resea rch, scientific discovery, public stewardship, service, and education. The OSA conducts archaeological research and public programs around the state, preserves ancient burial sites, and examines and reinters ancient human remains. The OSA also maintains the state archaeological repository, manages data on all recorded archaeological sites in Iowa, and publishes technical and popular books and reports on Iowa archaeology.

A Master’s degree with an emphasis in archaeological studies or closely related field.
Required Qualifications
- Applicant must meet minimum professional qualifications for archaeology as defined by the Department of the Interior (36CFR 61).
- At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration or management in North America.
- At least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archaeological resources.
- Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion on time and on budget.
- Understanding and ability to comply with the Association of Iowa Archaeologists Guidelines: http://aiarchaeologist.org/guidelines/.
- Extensive experience with MS Word and Excel for reporting and data collecting and management.
- Experience with GIS and GPS mapping.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license in good standing with three years driving history and ability to meet all other UI requirements for driving UI vehicles listed at: https://uiowa.edu/riskmanagement/vehicle-use.
- Physical ability to work and walk outside all day in all weather conditions carrying heavy loads while conducting field survey and excavation.
Highly Desirable Qualifications
- More than three years of full-time professional extensive experience with the Basic Qualifications listed above.
- More than three years of extensive experience in Iowa archaeology or the archaeology of adjacent states.
- Demonstrated understanding of geomorphology, including soil type identification, description, and analysis.
- Extensive knowledge of Plains or Midwestern prehistoric and historic archaeology.
- Extensive experience with GIS ArcMap 10.x to create maps and gather spatial data.
- Extensive experience with GPS or Total Station data collection devices.
- Basic PowerPoint, Photoshop, and Acrobat experience.
- Demonstrated ability to publish archaeological results in professional journals or books.
Desirable Qualifications
- Professional experiences with public outreach, education, and volunteer coordination.
