Assistant Professor in Cognitive Psychology

The University at Albany is currently conducting a large cluster hire of 26 faculty positions in the broad area of artificial intelligence. These positions span the campus to include eight Schools and Colleges in 20 departments. In addition, the recruitment of a Director of the UAlbany Institute for Artificial Intelligence is underway. 

Job Description:
The University at Albany, State University of New York, seeks an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Cognitive Psychology. The new hire will be a member of the UAlbany AI Institute. The successful candidate will provide evidence of expertise in AI and address how AI is integral to their research program. The research area for this position is open, and we encourage applications from all scholars with interests and backgrounds related to Cognitive Psychology or Cognitive Neuroscience, including applicants from related fields.

We are especially interested in applicants who could build on the Cognitive Area's existing strengths in vision and visual cognition, memory, attention, language, problem-solving, and/or decision-making, while also developing an independent and fundable research program that broadens the scope of the Area. We welcome applications from researchers who use a variety of methodological approaches, which could include computational modeling, behavioral experiments, eye tracking, electrophysiology (e.g., EEG), virtual reality, or advanced statistical or machine learning approaches for understanding behavioral and/or neural data.

Also, we are especially interested in applicants who have research interests that overlap with the new Albany Artificial Intelligence (AI) Institute. The AI Institute brings together scholars who develop, apply, and study AI methods from many perspectives and includes faculty from 27 Departments, including Psychology, Philosophy, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Public Health. The successful applicant will join a growing, active, and collaborative community of Cognitive Psychologists and Cognitive Neuroscientists to establish an innovative research program and to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship that fosters diversity and inclusion.

Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: 

  • A Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology/Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, or a related field, from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization by May 2023. 
  • Applicants must address in their application their ability to work with a culturally diverse population.
  • Applicants must demonstrate evidence of artificial intelligence in their existing research program.
  • A demonstrated potential for research in the field of Cognitive Psychology/Neuroscience (or related fields).
  • Applicants must address their plan and ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses
  • Applicants must have a demonstrated potential for seeking external funding for their research.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • A record of research in the field of Cognitive Psychology/Neuroscience (or related fields).
  • Experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses
  • Demonstrated experience in applying for and obtaining external funding.
