Accountability Editor
The Idaho Statesman in Boise, Idaho, is hiring an Accountability Editor to lead a talented, driven group of journalists who cover state government, politics, education, the environment and more. Three of those journalists also serve as our investigative team.
The accountability editor also will be a candidate to fill the assistant editor role as the No. 2 person in a newsroom of about 25 journalists.
The Accountability Editor should have a passion for watchdog journalism, be a skilled story editor and enjoy the opportunity to coach a group of investigative and accountability reporters who want to be pushed to greater heights. The team includes our state politics reporter, so some experience with politics is a plus. This leader will be charged with helping the accountability team deliver exclusive enterprise and impeccable investigative work.
Our McClatchy news teams are deeply committed to First Amendment values in our journalism and to holding leaders and institutions accountable. The Accountability Editor must be passionate about ensuring that government institutions conduct the public’s business in the open.
This leader needs to be a digital journalist at heart with a deep understanding of the digital news ecosystem and a firm understanding of how to reach digital readers through search, social media and other distribution channels.
Requirements - Education and knowledge:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent news experience required.

Proven record of directing or producing impactful journalism required.

3+ years of newsroom leadership preferred.
This editor’s skills should include:

Experience reporting on and/or leading investigative and accountability journalism.

Unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism.

Strong editing and writing skills and excellent news judgment.

A willingness to learn Idaho’s public records laws and aggressively pursue records.

An interest in telling stories using a range of media, and an enthusiasm for learning new skills and technologies.

Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy and the ability to take and give constructive criticism.

Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced, constantly evolving.

The proven ability to lead, inspire and convey knowledge to others, and to work effectively with a wide range of colleagues.

Ability to lead, motivate and supervise a team. Requires superior people and mentoring skills and knowledge of good management practices.
