The role: 

Join our team as a heavy equipment technician where you will perform and coordinate maintenance, repairs and modifications to specialized equipment used in highway maintenance, construction and testing. A day in the life:

  • Perform all phases of equipment diagnosis and repair.
  • Conduct thorough inspections and diagnostic tests to troubleshoot issues and repair equipment to specifications.
  • Troubleshoot, adjust, modify, repair and/or replace components and systems for a wide variety of construction equipment, snow removal equipment, vehicles engines, emission controls, computer controls, transmissions, drivetrain, air and hydraulic brake systems and electrical and climate controls.
  • Perform welding, cutting, fabrication and equipment modification to all ODOT highway maintenance using mobile and stationary welding and cutting equipment, arc and wire feed welders, acetylene torches and plasma arc cutters.
  • Prioritize and schedule work, order parts and determine appropriate location for the repairs and who completes it.
  • This position requires physical labor in all types of conditions such as standing, bending, stooping and lifting of up to 50 pounds or more. 
  • May require lifting of up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • May be exposed to traffic, dust, fumes, fuel, chemicals, herbicides and high noise levels which requires wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Occasional overnight travel and overtime work required.

What we need:

Six (6) years of experience as a journeyman heavy equipment mechanic.

Special qualifications:

Employee will be required to use a commercial motor vehicle to conduct business. You must possess a current, valid commercial driver's license A (CDL-A) with a tanker endorsement, and no air brake restrictions, OR have the ability to acquire one within six months of hire (ODOT will cover training and costs) to be considered eligible for this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks, including Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse registration and full query check for our final candidate(s) and annual query for current employees.

This position requires a maximum 30 minute response time to 315 N Canyon Blvd, Canyon City, OR 97820 for emergency call-outs.

  • Ability to learn and navigate computer-based fleet management systems efficiently including the use of email.
  • Effective time management as it pertains to managing multiple repairs while working independently.
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills including technical aptitude in the use of a laptop with diagnostic software to troubleshoot engine fault codes and navigate through diagnostic procedures.
  • Ability to maintain a preventative maintenance program across a diverse fleet of equipment.
  • Fabrication and welding skills with the ability to design, build and fabricate objects without a drawing and minimal input to gain desired outcome.
