Manager of Individual Giving, NSO
The Manager of NSO Individual Giving, NSO oversees the raising of funds from individual donors to support all National Symphony Orchestra operations and programming by planning and assisting in the execution of campaigns which provide operating funds, designated support, and restricted use funding necessary for the ongoing operations and future successes of the National Symphony Orchestra.
This position will manage the fundraising processes for the NSO Circles (donors $1,800-$14,999), major gifts (donors $15,000+), Board of Directors (donors $25,000+), National Trustees (donors $15,000+), designated support, and other projects for the NSO. Current annual fundraising goals related to this office are approximately $7 million, with an expectation of growth in the coming seasons.
In such, the incumbent will supervise two NSO Development Assistant Managers and three Development Assistants in the planning and execution of their respective NSO Development campaigns. With the NSO Chief Development Officer, (s)he serves as a primary liaison between artistic and board leadership of the NSO and the Development Office.
Duties and Responsibilities:
50% Fundraising

Initiate and build ongoing relationships with current Circles donors ($1,800+), major gift donors ($15,000+), National Trustees ($15,000+) and the NSO Board of Directors ($25,000+), as well as new prospects through meetings, phone calls and entertaining.

Identify, cultivate and develop profiles on funding/sponsor prospects.

Develop and supervise the preparation of creative, individually tailored written and/or alternative media presentations for solicitations.

Organize strong solicitations by enlisting Board and executive leadership as appropriate.

As necessary and appropriate, personally solicit contributions and/or manage follow-up to secure closure of major gifts.

Create project/program/festival funding/sponsorship opportunities including new or one-of-a-kind projects that are specific to the interests of prospects and have the potential for attracting major gifts

Coordinate with special events, appropriate Kennedy Center and NSO staff and donor staff in the planning and execution of events that involve donors/sponsors including board and committee meetings, benefit and cultivation events, and large-scale fundraisers.
20% Strategic Planning and Designated Support
- Work with the NSO Chief Development Officer, NSO and Kennedy Center management and program staff, Board members and volunteer leadership in developing, implementing and evaluating long-term goals and strategies for support.
- Act as a primary liaison to the programming and education staff to:
- solicit information about program/project/festival plans as they are developed;
- evaluate current programs for funding potential and recommend new initiatives based on known interests of funders,
- seek out new funding possibilities to establish institutional priorities and areas where collaborative efforts will advance the Center towards achievement of its goals.
30% Management

Supervise two Assistant Managers and three Assistants in managing National Symphony Orchestra fundraising campaigns, as outlined above.

Provide sufficient training so as to ensure increasing ability for the Assistant Managers to take on complex projects.

Supervise other support staff in production of materials and execution of administrative tasks and provide training to upgrade skills.

Coordinate all fundraising activities of the National Symphony Orchestra with Kennedy Center fundraising staff and priorities.

Actively promote a collegial and collaborative working relationship with all Kennedy Center Development Managers

Participate in all Development Department meetings, planning, and campaign implementation for current or long-term operating and capital purposes.
Education/Experience
- Bachelor's degree required, graduate degree in a related field preferred.
- Five to Seven years in professional development positions perferred.
- Experience managing fundraising staff.
Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required
- Very high levels of interpersonal, organizational, and written and oral communications skills
- Must be able to face daily difficult and complicated situations and react with diplomacy, sensitivity and a clear understanding of the broader issues
- Ability to relate well in a professional and easy manner to donors of all levels
- Excellent management skills, including time management for multiple employees
- Solid understanding of standard non-profit accounting standards and practices
- Ability and confidence to work without close supervision, including the ability to foresee development needs
- Capacity to work with donor databases to manage event and solicitation information
- Knowledge of the arts and orchestral music is strongly preferred
- Computer literacy is required

The noise level in the work environment is minimal, however attendance at major fundraising events and concerts is required. In those conditions, the noise level is very loud.
Travel up to 15% may be required.
