The Classification & Compensation team works to support the University mission through the development and implementation of policies, programs and practices that attract, compensate, retain and reward faculty and staff.

 

About the Position:

The Classification & Compensation Analyst serves as member of the Classification and Compensation team. This position provides guidance and analytical support for the implementation, communication and administration of faculty and staff compensation programs, policies and practices. As well as ensures compensation programs, policies, and practices are competitive, cost-effective, internally equitable, and compliant with all applicable regulations. With limited guidance and direction, this position performs market pricing, research and analyses making recommendations consistent with George Mason University’s compensation philosophy, established policies, and business needs. This position interfaces with senior level leaders to provide guidance and consultation, and interprets policies and makes recommendations on policy and procedural changes.

 

Responsibilities:

Compensation projects & initiatives. Serves as a facilitator in the development, implementation, administration and communication of compensation programs, and practices by collaborating with key stakeholders on a variety of projects, including compensation program design, analysis, and implementation. Conduct research from various sources for synthesis, reporting or providing to leadership. Lead and conduct focus groups and informational sessions related to compensation projects.

 

Administration of the classification and compensation programs. Provide day-to-day advice and support to HR staff and university managers and employees. Review and analyze requests for new positions, reclassifications, and other compensation actions to determine appropriate classification and compensation levels. Conduct organizational assessment at the request of department heads and provide recommendations to achieve unit goals. Confer with managers and other stakeholders to make sound recommendations consistent with university policy using classification factors, internal and external comparisons, and salary survey data. Conduct and participate in salary surveys to assess local, regional, and national labor markets as necessary or requested. Build and maintain relationships with other compensation professionals at other VA state institutions.

 

Data analytics as related to compensation. Provide analytical support and data analysis on compensation projects and human resource metrics. Manipulate complex data and compile meaningful metrics to support compensation decisions.

 

Provide consultative services, foster teamwork and communication. Serve as a resource by providing appropriate, accurate and timely guidance on a variety of human resource issues; research questions and concerns to ensure accurate and thorough answers. Provide counsel to employees as needed. May assist in other areas of human resources as needed. Actively contribute as a team member to promote a cohesive team environment within the Human Resources & Payroll Department and across the University community to ensure team members are well informed of current happenings impacting the work of the team. Encourage and facilitate open communication. Identify and communicate ideas for process improvement to ensure efficiency.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or other relevant field, or equivalent combination of education, training and/or work experience;
  • Experience in Human Resources with exposure to a variety of specialty areas;
  • Experience evaluating and classifying positions in a formal classification system to determine classification and compensation levels;
  • Experience participating in and interpreting results of salary surveys;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of HR principles and practices including applicable federal and state laws and regulations governing compensation and employment;
  • Skill in effective and respectful oral, written, and presentation communication; ability to tailor communication based on the audience;
  • Demonstrated skill in consultation and collaboration;
  • Skill in critical thinking with ability to synthesize and assess relevant information;
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office suite, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel;
  • Demonstrated skill in project management; ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures;
  • Demonstrated ability to speak before diverse groups, facilitate focus groups and training; and
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and to make reasonable, logical and defensible decisions.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • HR related certification, such as PHR, SHRM-CP or CCP;
  • Progressive HR experience in a higher education or large public employer;
  • Experience with market-based compensation systems;
  • Prior experience using Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) or Business Intelligence (BI) resources; and
  • Knowledge of market/merit compensation practices.
