The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies (https://philosophy-religion.ecu.edu/) is one of sixteen departments in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences at ECU. The department is a vibrant and research-active unit composed of thirteen full-time faculty members. It offers a BA in philosophy, and minors in religious studies, philosophy, and medical humanities. The Religious Studies Program (https://religionprogram.ecu.edu/) offers a concentration in Religious Studies in the B.A. Multidisciplinary Studies degree. Religious Studies faculty members support the interdisciplinary Religious Studies Program.

 Job Duties:
The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies seeks to fill a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor beginning in August 2024. This is a nine-month position. The successful candidate will create and teach courses in the area of Religion and Healthcare, as well as teaching introductory courses, including World Religions and Introduction to Religion, potentially in both online and face-to-face formats. Other areas of competency could include Religions of the Americas. This position will support the existing minor in Medical Humanities and the emerging concentration in Religion and Healthcare.

The successful candidate will undertake research in the area of Religion and Healthcare, such as, the study of how culturally competent practitioners affect patient attitudes towards care, the impact of belief systems of patients on their navigation of chronic disease states, and how patients’ religious beliefs affect how they regard healthcare. The new faculty member will be expected to build collaborative funded research and instructional relationships with partners in STEM departments and healthcare professional programs across the ECU campus. The successful candidate is expected to develop a sustained program of research in Religion and Healthcare, publishing articles, book chapters, and/or books in high quality presses.

The faculty member will serve in additional, value-added capacities to the interdisciplinary Religious Studies Program through recruitment and retention initiatives, curriculum development and improvement, assessment efforts, and other ways. Department, college, university, and professional service are also expected.

Minimum Education/Experience:
Ph.D. in Religious Studies, Religion, or a closely related field is required. However, ABD candidates may be considered. Initial appointment will be at the probationary-term rank of Assistant Professor. ABD candidates must have the terminal degree conferred prior to first reappointment. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Experience with online instruction is preferred.
