The Position:
Under general supervision, maintains control of and preserves property and evidence collected by police officials; performs general clerical duties. Incumbent must have excellent verbal and written communication skills; be detail oriented, conscientious, fast and accurate in completing assignments. In order to excel in this position, the individual must be a proven team player and possess extremely good customer service skills. This is a non-sworn class responsible for performing non-emergency civilian law enforcement support duties. The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a full time position and establish an eligibility list.
Summary Description:
Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act may include, but are not limited to the following characteristics, duties, responsibilities, knowledge, skills and other characteristics:
Receives, maintains, preserves, stores, and disposed of property and evidence collected in the course of police operations and investigations in accordance with specific laws, rules, regulations, and policies; takes photographs.
Prepares and maintains logs and records of property received, stored, or destroyed/sold; processes and/or transports property and blood/urine tests received in evidence to crime lab and identification unit for analysis.
Remains informed of laws, regulations, and policies relating to property and evidence preservation, storage, and disposal.
Coordinates and assists in annual auctions of disposable property, maintains security of property/evidence storage areas, orders evidence supplies, may give testimony in court as to preservation, storage, or disposal of property/evidence.
Performs clerical and record keeping duties as may be assigned; researches case information as necessary. Provides temporary and vacation relief in similar occupational fields as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of laws, rules, policies, and procedures pertinent to property control, office procedures and equipment operation.
Ability to protect the integrity of evidence; collect, store, and dispose of a variety of property; prepare and maintain accurate records; operate office equipment; take photographs and fingerprints; conduct file/record searches and follow verbal and written directions; maintain confidentiality of police matters.
Qualification Guidelines:
Education and/or Experience:
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance. Example combinations include graduation from high school or equivalent, and some clerical experience in a law enforcement agency.
Special Requirement:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license, and maintain a satisfactory driving record.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle; lift and carry moderate weight up to 50 lbs; climb stairs and ladders; bend; stoop; move about on unimproved land; visually distinguish red, amber, and green as part of normal color vision; hear horns, warning devices, radio transmissions, and frequency changes in the normal audio range; coordinate visual and muscular dexterity to operate equipment; operate business machines; sit or stand for extended periods of time; use a keyboard; and reach above the head.
Selection Process:
Following the administrative review of submitted applications, the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the selection process. The selection process may include the following elements: Written examination, performance test, and oral board interview. Successful candidates will be placed on an eligibility list. Selected candidate from the eligibility list will be contacted to continue with the remaining steps of the selection process consisting of an extensive background investigation, polygraph, psychological, and pre-employment physical examination which includes a drug/alcohol screening. Candidates must pass each phase of the selection process in order to be eligible for consideration.
