POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Kelvin Smith Library (KSL) of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) seeks an enthusiastic, innovative, and collaborative individual to serve as the Technology & Digital Strategies Librarian (TDSL).  Reporting to the Associate Director for Creation & Curation services, the TDSL coordinates all library technology and digital strategies to include the catalog & discovery systems, storage, desktop support, and related infrastructure. The TDSL sits on the Library Leadership Team and collaborates with related teams to plan and implement technology infrastructure and policies to advance library operations and services. The TDSL serves as the main liaison with the University’s central IT department (UTech) to provide a single point of contact and oversees the work of two UTech personnel. The TDSL works with all CWRU libraries and affiliated libraries to ensure catalog & discovery system services as needed.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Provide leadership for the planning and development of library technology strategies for the Kelvin Smith Library, the library catalog and discovery systems for all CWRU and affiliated libraries. (20%)
  2. Provides leadership, support, and training for all aspects of Integrated Library System for Kelvin Smith Library, all CWRU campus libraries, and both affiliate libraries, and serves as OhioLINK Lead Implementer. (25%)
  3. Serve as the Library’s liaison to UTech on the purchase, implementation, and support of all technology and digital storage solutions, including administrative, public, and lab computing. (15%)
  4. Carry out or support a variety of large and/or complex data loading, extraction, and manipulation or transformation processes for a range of library uses and with a variety of data types including but not limited to catalog/bibliographic data, holdings and item data, user data, etc. Coordinate and lead data clean-up and enhancement projects (10%)
  5. Test, troubleshoot, and resolve problems related to library systems, working with managers and staff across the libraries. Assist staff in the libraries with questions and problems related to system functionality (10%)

 

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Work collaboratively with managers across the libraries to support workflow development, staff training, and writing of any required local documentation (5%)
  2. Work with planning, budgets, and assessments to assess the usability of our library systems (5%)
  3. Supervise and mentor relevant staff and student assistants (5%)
  4. Practice a commitment to professional development, contribute professional contributions through committee service and professional publications or presentations to professional organizations at the local, regional or national level (3%)
  5. Assist with the coordination of other special projects, as assigned. [1%]
  6. Perform other duties as assigned. [1%]

 

CONTACTS

Department: Frequent contact with the Freedman Center for Digital Scholarship Team Leader and other team members to ensure excellent service. The SCCL also has regular contact with managers and staff on all levels of the organization to support the provision of library services. Occasional contact with managers and staff of other units in the library as required by projects.

University: Frequent contact with faculty, including faculty committees and other department administrators to determine teaching and research informational requirements to make appropriate information management decisions. Work regularly with faculty to develop, review, and improve information management policies and procedures. Consult occasionally with other campus librarians to coordinate information management decisions for the provision of library services. Consult with staff throughout the university to develop and implement programs for the delivery of services to students and faculty. Occasional communication with students to provide assistance and information resources to support their education and research needs

External: Participate in local, regional, and national organizations to maintain a network of informational professionals. Occasional collaboration with colleagues in OhioLINK and other academic libraries.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but may oversee non-exempt staff, student employees, and temporary full or part-time workers.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience. The initial rank of the LTDS will be based upon experience; professional knowledge, abilities and skills; contributions to the profession through service and scholarly endeavors; and professional qualities consistent with university and library values

Education/Licensing. Master's degree in a relevant discipline with 1 to 2 years of library experience.

  4. Professional Qualities. An inquisitive self-starter who works well both independently and as a member of organizational teams. Ability to meet consistent attendance. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
  5. Demonstrated leadership and management skills with the ability to identify priorities and delegate tasks
  6. Demonstrated experience with integrated library systems, e-resource management systems/principles, digital repositories, and other library technologies
  7. Proficiency with software programs/products associated with library functions (e.g., Sierra, EDS, OpenAthens, OCLC systems and services, MARCEdit, OpenRefine, etc.).  Preferred: familiarity with XML/XSLT, SQL, Git, and API web services.
  8. Working knowledge of current metadata schemas and descriptive cataloging practices such as MARC, Dublin Core, MODS, EAD, RDA, DACS, DCRM(B), and controlled vocabularies, such as LCSH, LCNAF, and AAT.
  9. Familiarity with general practices and standards for library technical services workflows (cataloging, metadata, acquisitions…)
  10. Familiarity with User Experience (UX) design principles and processes
  11. Demonstrated ability to work creatively, independently, and collaboratively while performing detail-oriented and repetitive tasks with a high degree of accuracy.
  12. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, computer/technological skills, and project management skills.
  13. Ability to develop and maintain a diverse and inclusive team environment in alignment with the values of the university and the library
  14. Excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across teams
